Bad CNN!

I was watching CNN this morning before work, enjoying my breakfast, when all of a sudden they put up a graph of tornado deaths by year. Let's take a look - this is the screenshot of the full TV screen:

I'm not sure whether this was done hurriedly before going on air, and there wasn't time to edit. I'm not sure if it was quickly scanned from a random website as there wasn't enough time to create the graph themselves based on the data. All I know is, I found it amusing!* Not too pretty on its own, but the default, meaningless legend on the right demanded I take a screenshot and share.

*Obviously not the subject matter... Just the visualization!

NFL Draft Day 1 - Who Did Best?

So which team did do the best in last night's draft? Here are some quick views based on average mock draft position. (Data is just from just 3 sites at this point - it seems sites are pretty quick to take their mock drafts down after the real one happens...)

Tableau Challenge Solved!!

I had a painful issue with some data I was working with in Tableau. What I wanted was a spreadsheet-like dashboard, which would allow the user to select those files with certain results. The trick was, I wanted them to be able to do both AND and OR selects with these results.

Tableau experts to the rescue! I think the end result is really neat:

NFL Stats Comparison

Here is a small analysis of stats comparison to wins, by team. I put in the logos of our teams since that's the ones we care about, but will probably go back and add all logos eventually. This clearly shows the Broncos were a decent team offensively, but were TERRIBLE on defensive, hence the hiring of a defensive coach.

The Packers were very comparable to the Steelers statistically, should be a great Super Bowl.

And the Bears were very solid defensively, but were more offensively challenged than I thought, ranked 28th in passing, but didn't need to do much with their defense supporting them.

The dashboardlooks cramped on the website, but is easier to compare when you go to each individual tab.
